Getty got the Flickr
Apparently Flickr and Getty made a deal granting Getty exclusive rights to license pictures from the Flickr pool.
Ever since affordable digital cameras broke through the print resolution barrier, pictures have become a commodity.
With the Getty Flickr deal wrapped up, the ambiguity of publishing rights for the vast amounts of online pictures will start to clear like fog on a beach in the rising sun.
The images are like the sand on that beach. Ubuiquitous, dirt cheap and easy to get. But like amber, beautiful images are ever so more hard to find. For professional picture consumers with an attitude, picture agencies become even more important.
With a distinguishable portfolio, access to exclusive pictures, professional quality service and consulting they place their brands and portfolios like lemonade stands on a hot summers beach.
But before you can set up shop to sell your lemonade
, check the congruency of your brand appearance, your portfolio, your pricing and your service promises.

More probably than not, Flickr will become certainly the most important online photo portal. Perhaps, in 1~3 years, it will be under the top 20 of the most frequent sites next to Ebay, Amazon or YouTube. Not least the integration of web 2.0 elements assure success. Like YouTube there are numerous examples of it.

Flickr most important?
Well, it most certainly depends on how to define "importance". If considering page impressions, clicks or users - then, yes, for sure. Until the next one comes around.
Another viewpoint can be the documentary, contemporary, historical or artistic angle. American Memory/LOC is certainly a very important online photo portal.
Which one has a more abiding backup strategy? Flickr or the Library of Congress?
But I don't see right now the equation of importance and success, neither using web2.0 elements as quarantee for either importance or success.

Yahoo acquire Flickr in good faith. With Yahoos financial backing a potential competition isn't really given I think. A good example is Youtube with Google. The effective reach is now essentialy higher than before.
