Should we even advertise in social networks?
The whole notion of "advertising" in social networks seems false to me. Perhaps oustanding creative advertising in these communities will work, but I'm skeptical. Even creative advertising is fundamentally instrusive, striving to capture attention through its creativity. But people in social networks are on to marketers, and when they're socializing, they're not receptive to advertising. It would be like some nerd walking around with a billboard at a cocktail party. People are more likely to say get the hell out of here, than pay attention. Social networks will require a new paradigm for brands to take part, if they expect to be heard. That's where we'll need creative thinking, in terms of new ways for brands to participate in the social space. Not advertising. Steve Rothman, Saatchi & Saatchi

the culture of social networking is about sharing, mashups, communicating what is important to oneself or a peer group.
Sometimes it is not more than an IM'ed "LOL".
But people take care about things they enjoy having around and love to share, communicate, tell stories, stay connected.
One day, after I spent way to much hours in the game Lego Star Wars on our Wii, I thought it a good idea to blog about this really cool game (see? I'm telling you about it - is this advertising?).
But the company Lego does not encourage me to do so. I don't get screenshots from their web site to publish on my site. There's no "copy and paste" link to include a cool Lego flash animation in my blog.
Lego does not want me to share my passion about a cool game they made and I'ld like to tell everybody about.
On the other hand, these cool Web2.0 sites are all about sharing. You want a Youtube video included on your own homepage? Just copy & paste the HTML code, Youtube is generously offering to everybody. For free. Because it matters.
You need slide show from slideshare? The same - easy as pie. Go ahead, try it out.
If a brand is honest, open minded and courageous, all it has to do is to stop prohibiting its friends, the family on the internets from sharing an experience that mattered to one of them.
And to stay in social networking terms, only suits from upper management would call this advertising. The users would definitely call it cool.
